Meet Our Staff

We began our coffee business in 2004 after meeting some Nicaraguan coffee farmers. I had a strange thought that if we could get some of these excellent beans to the U.S. and roasted, then we could make some money to pay our teachers on the Rio Coco. My friend Mike Remedios introduced us to Larry Larson, of Larry's Beans in Raleigh N.C., who helped us begin importing Nicaraguan coffee in 2005.

We purchased our own roaster in 2008- a Diedrich IR-12 that is yellow with a racing stripe.

We began serving coffee at the Vero Beach Farmers Market in 2008, and continued for the next 6 years each Saturday morning.

We opened our first cafe on the western Caribbean island of Utila, just off the north coast of Honduras in the summer of 2011 and then our first cafe in Vero Beach Florida the following December.

At first it was just the Bagby Family- Laura the chief, Moselle the service manager, Arielle the baker, with Lukas and Mikaela roasting coffee and serving drinks. I was and still am the dishwasher, maintenance man, coffee roaster, and interior decorator.

From this humble start we have grown and added many quality people to our team. We are fortunate to have an exceptional group of chefs, baristas, coffee roasters, bakers, and dishwashers who serve you here at the Rio Coco Café in Vero Beach and Utila Honduras..

Not only are they talented in their work, but many are scholars, teachers, athletes, pilots, artists, and good friends. We enjoy our work, and the community we have with you.
